Notre Dame upset Big East rival and 11th ranked Georgetown by a score of 68 - 53. The Irish came out fighting with a seven point lead after five minutes, and never relinquished the lead. This is a very impressive win for the bubble team, especially considering they won without Big East points per game leader, senior Luke Harangody.

While both teams nailed (8) 3-pointers, the difference maker was the 26 rebounds by Notre Dame. Three of five Notre Dame starters scored in the double digits: Ben Hansbrough, Carleton Scott, and Tim Abromaitis. Although the Hoyas made it interesting in the second half, the Irish never lost confidence and played a very smooth game.

What does this mean? It is no secret that the Big East is a very strong division holding the likes of possibly two number one seeds in Syracuse and Villanova. While Georgetown was 19-7 coming into this game and Notre Dame was 18-10, the separation was the 9 to 7 division wins.

In fact, the division holds at least five teams definitely entering the tournament, while Cincinnati, Connecticut, Marquette, Louisville and Notre Dame sit on the bubble. This win for Notre Dame was necessary if the team had any chance at reaching the summit of the NCAA—March Madness.

Notre Dame’s strength of schedule ranks 55th while their RPI ranks 72nd. Georgetown’s strength of schedule ranks 1st and their RPI is 9th. This loss for Georgetown will not knock them out of the running, but it will certainly lower their seed. If Notre Dame can put their divisional win-loss record on the positive side by beating Connecticut and Marquette in their final two games, they have a great shot at making the tournament.

The Big East was not the only division shuffling the seeds today, as 19 Tennessee upset 2 Kentucky.

    <intro>
Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen said during a Sirius radio interview that he will not be able to participate in drills at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. He said that he is not sufficiently recovered from surgery that repaired tendon damage in his right toe.

"I'm planning on doing all of the interviews and, obviously, being seen by the doctors so they can see my toe, but my toe isn't ready to go right now," Clausen said.

NFL.com is reporting that Clausen will have his toe examined on Thursday and then could host a pro day at Notre Dame sometime in April. The NFL draft will be held April 22-24.

Clausen doesn't think the NFL Combine will be a complete waste, even if he can't throw for the scouts. "I'm really excited to go down to Indianapolis next week so teams can get to know me as a person," Clausen said. "And I think after they get to know me as a person, they'll see the truth from what the perception is out there about me."

Clausen is a 6-3, 223 pound junior, who has declared for the NFL draft. Last season at Notre Dame he threw for 3,722 yards with only four interceptions.
</intro>

    <intro>
It became official last night as Brian Kelly was named the new head football coach of Notre Dames Fighting Irish.

With twenty years of coaching experience under his belt, Kelly has boundless experience as a head coach. He is a proven winner as a head coach, as he put together championship teams at Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan, mid-major Central Michigan and most recently with the BCS affiliate Cincinnati Bearcats.

He is a well known recruiter, especially in the Midwest, which is right in Notre Dame’s wheel house. In addition, Kelly understands all of the outside duties that come with college coaching, including the alumni, faculty relations, and the media.

Regardless of the massive amount of college football fans who detest the Irish, Notre Dame remains one of the top ten jobs in all of college football. Notre Dame may not be No. 1 in the country, or even in the BCS Bowl picture, but it still has the resources, facilities, media exposure, scheduling flexibility and tradition that ranks it in the top ten of all college football coaching jobs.

Kelly has been working his whole life in order to achieve this goal, and now his dream job is coming true. Now he just has to figure out how to turn the Irish back into a national championship caliber team.

He knows it will be a big challenge, but he is ready for it.

“When I refer to the challenge, it’s strictly getting to that high bar that’s been set at Notre Dame,” said Kelly. “We’ve got challenges, but we’ll go to work on those right away. We don’t get a five-year plan. This is a five-minute plan. We expect our football players to play at a high level immediately. Timetables, we don’t want to get into those, those are a setup.”

I know that fans of the Bearcats, and even some of their players are upset with Kelly’s decision to leave and coach the Irish, but this was the job that he has wanted his whole life. The opportunity arose, and he jumped at the chance.

Can you blame him? If your dream job was presented to you after years of success elsewhere, you and I alike would take it without even thinking twice about it. It is human nature to take opportunities when they are given to you, and Kelly did just that.

Personally, I think that most of the hate concerning Kelly taking the job is not the fact that he left Cincinnati, but the fact that the Notre Dame haters are really concerned that the Irish finally got a really good coach. A coach that could, and most likely will, turn the program around and bring them back and mold them into a championship team once again.

Kelly has won no matter where he has been in the college ranks. He won back-to-back national titles as head coach at Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan, built Central Michigan into a winning program in just three years, and then built the Bearcats into a Big East powerhouse.

One of Kelly’s chief attributes is that he knows how to win with other people’s players.

Charlie Weis did a great job of recruiting at Notre Dame, he just could not coach them well enough to win.

Kelly has won with every kind of roster you can think of. He is a coach, not just a system. He is the type of coach that will adjust his game plan to fit his players, not be stubborn and attempt to adjust his players to his game plan or system.

Kelly has always been about finding guys that he has and making them better. He develops the players that he has and does not make excuses about the players he does not have.

A perfect example was Tony Pike, Cincinnati’s starting QB this season. He was at one time a fifth string player for the Bearcats. It also includes Pike’s midseason replacement, Zach Collaros, who was forced into duty when Pike was injured.

Even with the loss of the Irish’s two biggest stars in quarterback Jimmy Clausen and wide receiver Golden Tate to the NFL, Notre Dame still has some big talent and Kelly will get the most out of what he has.

Clausen’s replacement will be red shirt sophomore and former five-star recruit Dayne Crist. Game breaking receiver Michael Floyd and star tight end Kyle Rudolph will also be returning for the Irish.

Kelly met with his new players for 25 minutes Friday morning. Kelly said he did not have any firm impressions of the team except for some film that he watched of one game earlier this season.

“It’s not just about getting bigger, stronger, faster,” he said. “It’s getting your players to trust, to be accountable on a daily basis, it’s about developing them as young men. To get people to do things that they would not normally do on their own.”

After the meeting, Irish players said they were excited about their new head coach. Tight end Kyle Rudolph, who happens to be from Cincinnati, said that he has been getting calls from some of the Cincinnati players as well as some other friends who attend the University.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things so I’m excited to get things going,” he said. “I’ve gotten a few text messages saying that I’ve stolen their coach.”

Dayne Crist said he is excited about the idea of running the spread offense even though he was recruited by Weis, who ran a pro-style offense. Crist said he is encouraged to see how quarterbacks with different quarterbacking styles have done well under Kelly’s guidance.

“It’s great to see the versatility he has. Obviously he’s a tremendous coach,” said Crist

Kelly, who is 48 and a native of Boston, is coming into a tremendous situation and when he has done that before he has won. This is a guy who gets everything possible out of the players that he has. I mean come on; he had an absurd record of 34-6 with the Bearcats, of all teams.

Kelly should be able to repeat the instant first year success that former Irish coaches Charlie Weis and Tyrone Willingham both had in their first seasons with the Irish. The biggest difference is that Kelly’s track record shows that he should be able to maintain the success for more then one year.

Notre Dame just hired a proven college coach and a winner. Something the program has needed for a long long time.
</intro>

    <intro>
The rampant and rapid speculation is over, it's official now.

After weeks of rumors that slowly but shirly gained a head of steam, the official announcement was finally made. The break-up of Brian Kelly and The University of Cincinnati is an ugly one. A bitter ending that leaves the breakee in mourning while Kelly sprints to greener ($$) pastures at Notre Dame.

Many thought that the historical season and legendary Pittsburgh game might have swayed Kelly to stay. Nope

After months of telling the Cincinnati media how much his family loved the city he left it in a heaping pile of depression. Cincinnati football is just a pit stop, nothing more. There is always a bigger and better job out there.

He flirted with the city long enough to surgically rip its heart out as you can read here.

Kelly, who posted a 24-5 record in three seasons at UC, led the Bearcats to back-to-back BCS bowls including a New Year’s Day meeting with Florida in the Sugar Bowl on 1/1/10.

He teased Cincinnati into thinking there could be a marriage between the two. Till Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno like old age do we part. He was quite possibly the most talked about person in the city in this almost extinct 2009.

Over 70 local public appearances, demands for bigger and better facilities, helicopters onto the field at local high schools, he was more or less a politician (just like his dad).

Instead it turned out to be nothing more than a three year fling.

Has a coach ever left an undefeated 12-0 team heading to a major BCS Bowl game before it's played??? This is an unprecedented for jumping ship.

But the city is one thing. People will move on to the Bearcat basketball team and forget about its football team once again.

More than anything else this is a blatant and deep stab to the players. The way Kelly handled his last week as UC's head football coach was a disgrace.

He didn't mentioned anything to his players leading up to the epic 45-44 thriller over Pittsburgh. As the rumors mounted the players were left answering questions to the media that Kelly refused to address.

Judgement day turned out to be the player banquet on Thursday. Kelly did not meet with the team before hand. Most hadn’t seen or heard from him since he met with Notre Dame officials earlier in the week.

“He told us from the get-go that we’d be the first people to know whatever he decides,” senior quarterback Tony Pike said Thursday evening before the team banquet.

“We’re going to keep him at his word. We’ve trusted him this far and we’re going to believe what he says.”

As it turns out, Kelly’s players were among the last to know. They were left to find out through ESPN and media folk. Kelly didn't address the team until too many players had found out.

"We don't really care what he has to say anymore, he can go talk to his Notre Dame team," tight end Ben Guidugli said after the post-banquet team meeting.

Players were openly shell shocked. After three years of demanding media attention and respect for the program, he flushed them both down the toilet in one swoop.

"I didn't want to hear it," said star senior receiver Marty Gilyard.

"I'm fairly disgusted with the situation—him letting it last this long... Everybody and their mamma knew what was going on. I feel like he did our team an injustice. Hopefully he'll pack his things up and get to South Bend in a hurry."

What positive can Bearcat fans from all this? Well, Kelly never got a first down or a tackle for loss this year. He just taught them how to.

"We were the ones out there playing every play, every snap. He was just the one calling the plays," reminded defensive lineman Alex Daniels.

Kelly finally emerged from the escalator into the hotel’s Gibson Foyer after the banquet, side-by-side with two police officers. He is on a one-way ticket the South Bend as he tosses the Sugar Bowl keys to assistant Kerry Coombs.

He issued no comment about the Notre Dame job. Boy oh boy how Zach Collaros and company would loooooove to play the Jimmy Clausen-less and Golden Tate-less Fighting Irish next year.

The Irish lost to UCONN and Pitt in the two games both teams played, while UC survived both. Notre Dame was 6-6 and the equivalent of a mid-level Big East team with Clausen and Tate. UC was the 12-0 undisputed conference champ with only one returning starter on defense from a year ago.

Kelly made it to the second best game of the year in the Sugar Bowl. He might have just decided to skip his only chance at winning it.
</intro>

    <intro>
Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate have officially announced that they will be heading into the NFL draft, a decision that I agree is both the smart and best choice.

Both players had a tremendous year, and they were often in the Heisman talk, but Notre Dame’s record of 6-6 killed those chances. Still Clausen and Tate made it clear that they were ready for the next step.

“Growing up as a kid, one of my lifelong dreams has been to play in the NFL and with that being said, with the support of my family and coaches I will be forgoing my senior year and entering the 2010 NFL draft,” Clausen said in a release handed out by the school before his news conference

Clausen will be fulfilling that dream as he is one, if not, the top QB prospect in the draft. Clausen was second in passing efficiency, had 28td passes and only 4 ints this year.

Moving onto the draft is smart because Clausen is the most NFl-ready Qb this drafting year. He knows how to keep pocket presence, he is a very efficent and accurate thrower, and he knows how to hit the deep ball. Those skills already intact give him the utmost advantage against the other Qbs.

Tate has another story. He is relatively small for a wide receiver, but don’t let that fact deceive you. He has great play-making skills. I have seen some experts compare him to Steve Smith, and I totally agree with them. He is one of those guys that you are sure he will come down with the ball. That level of trust is crucial between Qb and receiver.

Like I said in my previous article on the same matter, Clausen would either stay together or leave together. The fact of the matter was it was just smarter and more logical to enter the draft rather than staying.

I wish the best of luck to both of them in their NFL career, and will be watching how they progress in their NFl career.

    <intro>
If you look around the Notre Dame football stadium these days you want just see a bunch of empty seats due to the home football season being over for the Irish. You may also see help wanted signs around the building.

Due to the fact that Notre Dame has fired head coach Charlie Weis after five season as Notre Dame's head football coach. Weis had a record of 35-27 in the five years at Notre Dame winning only one bowl game in the five years, and losing two BCS games as well.

So now the search is on for the fourth Notre Dame coach since legendary Coach Lou Holtz left Notre Dame, those other coaches besides coach Weis, are Bob Davie, and Tyrone Willingham.

So with all the prestige that goes into coaching at Notre Dame, who takes the job I have heard names like Brian Kelly for Cinncinnati who has done a great job with the Bearcats turning that program around into a national power, I heard Bob Stoops name come up as well but Stoops last week decided to stay at Oklahoma.

So that leads me to my theory on who should be the next head football coach at Notre Dame. I think Brian Kelly could be a good fit, I also think a former NFL head coach with a winning attiutitue and can have that no no-nosence way about things would be a good choice and the would be former Oakland Raider and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach John Gruden. He's a hard nose coach that always wants the best for his team and his players.

I have one more name that could be a suprise choice and no I'm not talking about Urban Meyer, even though Urban still could take the job if he really thinks after Tebow goes he can do any better at Florida and for Notre Dame that would be a dream hire.

But the guy I have in mind would be Jim Harbaugh. Look what he has done with Stanford? He has, like Brian Kelly, turned the Stanford football program into a national power. He has two wins over USC, both at USC mind you, so I think both Brian Kelly, John Gruden or Jim Harbaugh would be great fits at Notre Dame if they can't get Urban Meyer away from Florida.
</intro>

    <intro>
With the season winding down for the Fighting Irish there is a question that’s just as big as whether Charlie Weis will return.

What will the future be for Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate?

Both are the main guns for the Notre Dame offense, and both are eligible to enter the NFL draft. Charlie Weis and athletic director Jack Swarbrick are scheduled to sit down with both Clausen and Tate and talk to them about their future.

Clausen is more likely to end his career at ND and join the draft simply because he already a projected 1st rounder. For Clausen, joining the draft is the smartest choice. Clausen has been the star of the ND team this year. He has, week after week, shown his Heisman capabilities. Maybe the most convincing is that out of other QB’s with 1st round potential, that means Tebow and McCoy, Clausen is more NFL ready than the other two.

Clausen is a polished QB that knows how to make good choices when under pressure. He has both a cannon and an accurate arm. An arm that has not thrown more than 2 INTS this season. Why risk having a bad year next year? Clausen should make the smart choice and enter the NFL draft.

It’s not as easy as a decision for junior Golden Tate.

No doubt Tate has had a great season, but many people see his size, 5′11″, as a big disadvantage. It’s true that being tall is a huge advantage for NFL receivers, but that doesn’t mean a player can’t have a successful career being smaller than average receiver height. If you want an example look at Carolina’s Steve Smith.

It’s a lot harder to predict Tate’s decision. It could really go either way, but my guess is that if Clausen goes so will Tate. Who knows who will be ND’s QB next year, if Clausen does commit to the draft. That decision won’t be made until next season’s training camp. Tate might be a good receiver but not knowing who will be throwing to you next year is a too big of a risk to take.

<![endif]-->

That is a direct quote by former Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White from October 30th 2005. This was right after he gave Charlie Weiss a 10-year contract extension after coaching just 7 games. At the time Weiss was 5-2 and coming off a near upset over USC. Everyone in South Bend was enthusiastic about the future and I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time to reward their coach with a $40 million contract and sign him through 2015. It is now four years, one bowl win and two Navy losses later and Charlie is a dead man walking to put it nicely. It’s a foregone conclusion that he will be looking for a new job in a few weeks. While I sympathize with anyone who is facing unemployment in this economy, Weiss will still be receiving millions of dollars as a result of that extension and I’m sure he will be able to land a coordinating job somewhere if he chooses to work. But this article is not really about Charlie per se, it’s more about the bone-headed decision to give him a ton of money and a long-term deal before he had proved his worth.

Weiss came to Notre Dame amid great fanfare after a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Although he was not their first choice, they had initially courted Urban Meyer, Weiss was thought of as an offensive genius and his status as an alumnus cemented his credentials. He had initial success with the Irish, albeit with Tyrone Willingham’s recruits. In his first two years as the coach of the Irish they won 19 games and lost 6. In 2007 everything fell apart and they only won 3 games, making it the worst season in school history. Keep in mind that they have been playing football at Notre Dame since 1887. Since that abysmal year things have improved slightly, but not nearly to the point where they could justify that extension.

It’s hard to put a finger on why things went South in South Bend. The argument could be made that Weiss did not recruit well and once he was coaching with his players, they did not perform up to the standards of Notre Dame football. There’s also criticism that Weiss concentrated too much on offense and neglected the defensive side – which does kind of make sense given his background as an offensive coordinator. Finally there is also the fact that he had never had a head coaching job prior to Notre Dame and that the inexperience eventually caught up with him. Maybe he was a crappy coach to begin with and just got lucky the first two years. It doesn’t really matter at this point.

What does matter is the fact that Notre Dame will have to pay him $18 million to buy out his contract at the end of the season, money that should never have been spent in the first place. Here’s why: When Weiss was given that contract extension he was already signed through 2010. Yep, that’s right – in 2005 they already had him locked up for the next 5 years. Had they just let that initial contract run its course and evaluated his performance at the end of it, they could have saved like $25 million. Here’s my question for Notre Dame – in October of 2005 was there such a concern about losing Weiss to another school or back to the pros that it necessitated giving him a ton of cash and a 10 year extension? No freaking way. At the time it was a stupid decision, in hindsight it looks like the worst personnel decision in the history of college football.

On Saturday Notre Dame will play against Stanford in what will most likely be Charlie’s final game as coach of the Irish. Chances are that they will lose too the Cardinal, he will be fired and Notre Dame will pay a whopping sum to buy out the remaining years of his contract. Like I said before, I have sympathy for Weiss but none for a University that would make such a stupid decision. If any good can come out of this whole saga it should be the lesson to other colleges: there’s no need to reward someone with an exorbitant contract for a mediocre product.

    <intro>

Have you ever thought what would college football be like if certain things had taken place over the years?

Did you know that Tim Tebow almost signed with Alabama when Mike Shula was the head coach? Had Tebow decided to sign with Alabama, Shula might have kept his job for at least another year or more, but would Alabama been as successful as it is now under Nick Saban? I doubt it. Tebow might have been stuck in a bad system at least for the first few years of his collegiate career, but boy wouldn’t you have loved to seen the combination of Nick Saban and a Tim Tebow? WOW!

Former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux is now an all-star at Division I-AA Jacksonville State, but before he got kicked off the team at LSU, he was their future. You wonder now if LSU would be a different team had Perrilloux been quarterbacking the Tigers. Look at the Tigers the last few years, they haven’t had stability at quarterback and it has hurt them. The talented, but troubled Perrilloux would have made a HUGE difference on that team.

Or what if Rich Rod decided to take that job at Alabama then Michigan? You think Rich Rodriguez regrets not taking the Alabama job or better yet how about regretting leaving West Virginia? How life would have been different for both Alabama and Rich Rod had he taken the Alabama job? I personally think after seeing what he has done at Michigan, that Alabama dodged a bullet. This man, a few years ago was the hottest coach in football and in just a short time, his career has gone down the toilet. But who knows, it’s a little bit tougher to recruit kids up North for the spread then it is down South. He might have been able to find a few more speedsters for his offense here then up there.

And what if Les Miles had taken the Michigan job? Right now, Miles is probably asking himself the same question. Michigan would KILL to be 8-3 right now, but at LSU, Miles, I’m guessing, especially after that dumb call yesterday, is on the hot seat. LSU has seen the mountain top and they don’t like finishing third in the West behind now Alabama and Ole Miss. People around these parts have pretty much said that Miles was winning with Saban’s players and so far, they have been dead on. That’s why Miles is considered a buffoon in the SEC because he’s yet to prove he can do it with his own players. At Michigan though, he’d be a god right now.

Don’t you think Notre Dame is kicking themselves by not hiring Urban Meyer when they had the chance? Meyer WANTED to be the coach of the Fighting Irish and rumor has it, would have dropped Florida in a heart beat had they come-a-calling. But noooooo. Notre Dame rolled the dice and took a chance on a guy who hasn’t been a head coach on the college or pro level in Charlie Weis. Ok, I have to admit at first glance hiring Weis looked like a good move. The guy did make Tom Brady, well Tom Brady. Or did he? Is it my imagination or did Brady actually get better after Weis was gone? But can you imagine what could have been if Meyer was there? Notre Dame wouldn’t be fighting to play for a bid in the Papa John’s.com Bowl, they’d be fighting for at least a BCS Bowl.

Hindsight I know is 20/20, but how different would the landscape of college football have been if any of these things had taken place over the last few years; think about it.

</intro>

    <intro>

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost a heart-breaking game 33-30 to the Huskies yesterday in double overtime. With the loss, the Irish will probably not play in a meaningful bowl game but the loss could also lead to the firing of head coach Charlie Weis as well. After the first two years in Weis’ tenure, the Irish were 19-6 but things have gone downhill to say the least since 2006. The Irish finished 3-9 in 2007, 7-6 in last year’s campaign and now fall to 6-5 this year for a combined 16-20 record.

While I am not a fan of Notre Dame, I don’t feel that the play of the team should fall on him. This happens all the time in sports when teams don’t perform well the blame falls on the head coach. While the coaches design the schemes on each side of the ball, it is up to the players to execute plain and simple. If the university does elect not to allow Weis to return next season, they shouldn’t have made the choice to sign him to a ten year contract extension shortly into his tenure in South Bend. While the Irish may have lost three games in a row, they were never going to contend for a national title. In fact, as good as the 2005 and 2006 teams were, they were not national title contender material either.

In order to be successful, you have to be provided with the tools in order to be successful. The team was decent on the offensive side of the ball with Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and Michael Floyd but the defensive unit was mediocre at best as the Huskies showed by racking up 372 yards on the ground. When you give up that many yards against the run, you will not win very many games. While the Irish may finish the season at 6-6, depending on if they beat Stanford, I think it would be a mistake if the university didn’t bring Weis back next year.
</intro>

    <intro>
It was another disappointing outcome for Notre Dame fans and their players. Senior day at Notre was spoiled by the Huskies.

Once again you can't blame the offense because the Fighting Irish's offense played very well today. They did a very nice job on balancing the running and passing game, but the defense let this team down. The Irish let thew Huskies run all over them. The Huskies ran for a total of 231 yards and 2 tds.

You can't forget UConn's dedication they showed all game. You could tell they were playing with a purpose. This was UConn's most memorable win in its existence since it's the first time they have won since cornerback Jasper "Jazz" Howard was stabbed to death.

Jazz this is for you," UConn coach Randy Edsall said. "Best win we have ever had."

Coach Edsall and his players will remember this game for the rest of their life. It was a deserving win to a deserving team.

As for Weis this loss won't help his cause on hoping to return next year. His winning percentage, .573, is now lower than both of the two former coaches before him. It is now the 2nd time in row Weis hasn't been able to win on Senior night.

Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and Michael Floyd all shared very productive nights. Clausen threw for 329yds and 2 tds. Tate caught 9 balls for 128yds and a td. Floyd caught 8 balls for 104yds and a td.

Notre Dame, now 6-5, play Stanford next Saturday, November 28th
</intro>

    <intro>
Times like this, I wish George Carlin was still around.

He famously compared baseball and football. And this part was missing, but the general feeling was that football was a game for men and baseball is a sport for boys.

But anyone who has heard Tom Hanks famous quote from "A League of Their Own" knows, there's no crying in baseball. Apparently, we have gotten softer in football. Or maybe it is just modern coaching. Anyway, according to reports, Jets coach Rex Ryan was crying. Earlier, in an undefeated moment, he was hailed as a brilliant new coach. Now, after a losing streak, he is reported to be crying to his team. Remember when the Jets and Giants were both undefeated? Maybe the New York fans used all their wishes getting the Yankees the World Series Championship. The Yankees have more wins in November (2) then the Jets, Giants, Knicks, and Nets combined (1). Actually, I was going to include the Mets in that list of teams that can not win in November, but then I left them out in consideration to Kerri Senno who is celebrating her 24th birthday.

Now we all know that coaches go through tough times. At Notre Dame, Charlie Weis was asked for his opinion about the Patriots going for it against the Colts. From ESPN...

Notre Dame is a shell of its former self.

Sure they have a stud quarterback that can put points on the board with the best of them. But the tradition in South Bend is fading faster than the value of the dollar. It isn't prestigious to go to Notre Dame anymore.

As the Fighting Irish wrap up another disappointing season; the status of Charlie Weis continually is questioned. If he were to be fired, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly and ESPN's Jon Gruden have been mentioned as a successor (along with Urban Meyer, but he would be straight loony to leave the swamp).

My question is why?

Why would Kelly leave a program right as they are peaking? Kelly is quickly achieving a tremendous reputation in the Cincinnati area and the fans think the man turns everything into gold. He can do no wrong in the Queen City, turning into one of the biggest figures in the whole state of Ohio in 2009. Why leave the throne?

With quarterback Jimmy Clausen possibly leaving after this year, whomever takes over will have to enter the dreaded "rebuilding stage." The backup quarterback is saddled with an ACL injury that will keep him out of next year's spring practice.

It will be rocky for whomever takes over. So if you're Kelly, why piss off the same people that worship you and willingly be placed under a gigantic microscope of second guessing and criticism?

Jon Gruden has settled in nicely as an ESPN Monday Night Football analyst. He brings strong passion and valuable insight to the table every week.

Lots of swirling rumors report that a return to coaching in 2010 is eminent for Gruden. But will he have the patience to deal with college kids after being in the NFL for so long? Not to mention the lack of recruiting experience he brings to the table.

Think about football in the Fighting Irish's heyday under Lou Holtz, and think about it now. Back then, being on TV every game was a huge deal. Now every BCS conference team has games on T.V. The Big Ten even has its own channel.

The team hasn't won a championship in 21 years and hasn't had a Heisman winner in 22, yet the ridiculously high expectations from the fan base continue. The tradition of a school is a non-factor for kids today, that used to be a major selling point at Notre Dame.

It's not a great place to go to school in terms of hot girls or campus/town life either. That is a major reason why the Florida schools, Texas, and USC are flourishing. They have the "extras" that ND can't provide. The weather stinks, lots of rain and wind. Why deal with that when you can go to school next to a beach?

While everyone else is battling for conference titles, Notre Dame is on an island as an independent. As a player, if you lose three games, you have nothing to play for. And playing USC every year doesn't help.

So what is appealing about the Notre Dame job? Money. It's a fat pay check that can rarely be matched. And unfortunately in college football, the coaches follow the money. So even if Gruden or Kelly read this article, the endless money symbols will cloud their judgement. This is how Notre Dame stays relevant ... $$$.

As you listen to the never ending debates about Charlie Weis getting fired just remember that the same debates will continue to ring, regardless of the head coach. But when the $$ is right, most coaches can handle that juuuust fine.
</intro>

    <intro>
The 19th ranked Fighting Irish will take on long-time rivals, the Navy Midshipmen.

Notre Dame’s last game against Washington State was the first boring game the Irish have played all year as they swamped the Cougars 40-14. Even though it was a boring, one-sided game, I was happy. For one time in the season the Irish dominated a team they should have dominated.

This week the Irish play the Midshipmen in a rival that began in 1927. The Irish have a 71-10-1 edge on the rivalry. The Irish had a NCAA record of 43 straight wins against the Navy, but that was broken in 2007 when the Midshipmen won in OT. Even though the rivalry has been one-sided both teams hold this game in high regard. Both teams respect each other, and that’s what gives this game a little extra meaning.

Notre Dame’s Micheal Floyd is expected to play Saturday, but he is going to be limited. This is great news to hear for the team and fans. Floyd suffered a broken collarbone Sept. 19th in 36-33 win over Michigan State. The Irish’s backup QB will be out for the next four to six months leaving the backup duty to fifth year senior Evan Sharpley.

The Navy come in a little banged up as three of their defensive starters will be sitting out, but that doesn’t mean they will stop playing hard. The Navy only need one more win to clinch playing in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31st.

With all these factors it’s hard to pick the Navy over the Irish in this one. The Irish are a better team than they were in 2007. I expect Notre Dame to win and to win easily.

The game is on Saturday, November 7th, at 2:30pm est. You can see the game on NBC.

    <intro>
The chubby chief of Notre Dame football, Charlie Weis, limps along the sideline, one step ahead of the guillotine.

Weis is college football’s rendition of Eric Mangini, the woeful captain of the Cleveland Browns. After tasting victory as assistants in New England, both men have channeled Bill Belichick’s persona – ornery, secretive, and polarizing. But neither man realizes that the luxury of choosing your mood comes only with championships. In essence, Weis has put the cart before his ass.

Like Mangini in New York, Weis had a successful first year guiding the Fighting Irish. During that season, before the ink dried on his initial contract, Weis squeezed an extension out of Notre Dame, using the New Orleans Saints’ interest in him as leverage. Since then, the team has been terrible, irking alums and fans who want the book closed on this bad chapter.

Weis belittles the team’s old salt (with Bob Kuechenberg being the most vocal member), ignores NBC’s fawning reporters and, by all accounts, has the mouth of a drill instructor. He is not in the mold of the school’s Catholic ethos.

Notre Dame was so good for so long because they were willing to play anyone, anywhere, anytime. Their schedule once bulged with Hurricanes and Seminoles. Now they play a pillow-soft campaign, while Weis stiff-armed Nick Saban when the Alabama coach tried to etch a fresh rivalry with the Golden Dome.

Cynics rejoice at the program’s football failure, citing the firing of Tyrone Willingham as the source of karmic justice. In their defense, Weis enjoyed his best season with Willingham’s players. But then Tyrone wrecked the Washington Huskies, so the hatred is now the residue of race-baiting.

So Notre Dame keeps Weis, either out of optimism or financial need. There would be a significant buyout in order should the Irish fire Weis, and perhaps they bless him with their eyes closed, hoping that the mojo of Touchdown Jesus can overcome the coach. Can their faith mute the anguish of well-heeled alums who feed the team its quid?

The men of Troy gallop toward South Bend for battle this Saturday. The Trojans may represent Weis’s final exam. He has never beaten USC. Indeed, his most celebrated game was one he lost them, 38-35, in 2005 – the infamous Bush Push classic. Many speculate that another loss to Southern Cal would be the final frame of his audition reel for unemployment.

Urban Meyer, the king of college football (and former ND assistant), has an out-clause in his contract to return to Notre Dame as head coach. With the titanic Tebow ready to graduate, leaving a legacy of maybe three national titles on Florida’s shelf, Meyer will lose the best player he’s ever had and, with him, could lose his desire to stay with the Gators.

The Dome’s brass needs to pull a Steinbrenner, opening their vaults and theirs souls to Urban Revival.

The star Notre Dame quarterback missed the whole 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter before coming in to go 6-9 on the last drive and hitting his tight end Kyle Rudolf for a touchdown. Dayne Crist got a lot of playing time based on Jimmy's turf toe injury. Crist was admirable in his time showing his ability to run the football and along with Golden Tate, out of the Wildcat, led the Irish to a 17-7 half time lead.

Clausen struggled with his toe though in the first half and looked average, eventually throwing his first interception of the year. But Notre Dame looked to be in control with their dominant running game leading the way.

Purdue then decided to move the ball on a Notre Dame defense that so far this year has played pathetic and yielded a ton of points since their opener. 38 to Michigan, and 30 to Michigan St., a Irish defense that couldn't stop Tate Forcier's grand-ma up the middle if they wanted to. Purdue scored 14 fourth quarter points on two touchdown passes from Boilermakers quarterback Joey Elliott.

Notre Dame then got the ball back with 3:41 left on the clock and that is too much time to give Jimmy Clausen, even with a bad toe. Clausen then did what he does best, move this Notre Dame offense like the well oiled machine that it is.

“Toughness” hit 4 different receivers in the dramatic game winning drive for the Irish and finished his night 15/26 171 yards, one touchdown and one pick. The numbers are not the prettiest numbers, certainly not even close to the 4 strait 300 plus yard gems that preceded this night, but in the clutch with limited resources Jimmy Clausen showed his moxie and his poise that make's a great quarterback and leader. His night was not about numbers, but about pride, and well a little luck of the Irish too.

    <intro>
Charlie Weis and his team must feel really great right now after shutting out Nevada, 35-0. It was a right step on the road to recovery for the Notre Dame football team.

All areas of the team were spot on. The defense was fast and shut down both the running and the passing game. The offense was unstoppable. Notre Dame ran away with the game early, and once they had it they never looked back.

Jimmy Clausen had a Heisman-caliber game, throwing for 315 yards and 4 touchdowns. The ball came out out of his hand like a bullet and was always incredibly accurate as well.

Sure, it wasn’t a top 25 team they played in South Bend on Saturday, but a game like that should improve Clausen’s confidence in the pocket and the overall confidence of the offense. It was a great day for the junior QB and hopefully we will see more games like that from him.

It was just a blast to watch this game. Being a Notre Dame fan I had seen some bad football being played by the Irish over the past 2 years, and this game was basically a vacation from all that bad football. For once this team looked like the old Fighting Irish I knew and loved.

It's a big win against a small school, but it seemed like it was a huge win against a huge team. You could see the happiness on the players’, coaches’, and fans’ faces. This is a win the team needed. To start off a season like that, after playing so poorly the past couple of seasons, must be a big relief. Hopefully it is also a sign that this team can do big things this year.

Next week the Irish play against rival Michigan. It is another big game and comes against a team that is in the same position Notre Dame is, only worse. Both teams will want a W, so expect a hard fought football game. You can check out the game on September 12 at 2:30cst.
</intro>

    <intro>
When people say Notre Dame, most people think about Notre Dame's football team.

The Fighting Irish have always been a very prestigious football team. They hold the second best winning percentage by any college team with,only behind Michigan, but the past two years have not been so good to the Irish.

The past two years have been hell for Irish fans. The Irish were a combined 9-15, including setting the most loses in a season in 2007 with 9 . The Irish didn't fare any better those 2 years against their main rival USC, in which they lost 0-38 in 2007 and 3-35 in 2008. So you would think it could only get better for the Irish? Well thats exactly what might happen.

This year has the potential to be a comeback year for the Irish. With a relatively easy schedule, the Irish can post an above .500 record for the first time in 2 years, and can end up in the top 25 at the end of the year. The Irish were ranked at 23 in the pre-season polls, which I think is a lenient ranking considering being average last season, but the Irish have the players to prove they belong in the top 25.

The Irish's draft class was in the top 10 this year, and that is a positive step in rebuilding this college to be a powerful force it is known to be. The offense has matured , and ready for a different season this year. A season the Irish hope to win a spot in one of the major bowl games. They not only want to be in one, they want to win one.

The offense is lead by junior QB Jimmy Clausen and junior WR Golden Tate. These two love each other and are prepped to have a stellar year. Clausen has been called a bust, but he is now in his prime, and so is the offense. Notre Dame is known to have a potent offense, starting at the QB position. With greats like Joe Montana, and recently Brady Quinn, Clausen has high expectations to fulfill.

Another person, who is not a player, has high expectations to fulfill. When I say that I mean Charlie Wies. Going into his 4th season Weis has put up a modest 29-21 record. The only great year Weis has had was in 2006, where they went 10-2, but lost in the Sugar Bowl to LSU.

After the last two years fans had been calling for Notre Dame to fire Weis, and there was rumors that hes was going to be fired, however, Weis wasn't fired. This year will be a statement to just how good a coach Weis is. He has had mixed reviews over his coaching career with Notre Dame. All agree he is a great scouter, but some argue he is a terrible on-field play caller and coach. Weisz has the tools. Now can he use those tools efficiently? We will just have to see.

As you can see this year can be a make or break season for the Fighting Irish. The players are there, the field is set, and the fans are ready. Could this be a comeback year, or will just be another disappointment? Nobody can know, except maybe Touchdown Jesus does.

You can catch Norte Dame's first game this Saturday, September 5, against Nevada at 3:30pm est.
</intro>

    <intro>
As a kid, my rite of autumn was a hatred of Notre Dame football.

It was the contempt many had for the Yankees, where the players weren’t just athletically gifted but seemingly imbued with biblical virtue once they don the hat or helmet.

My Saturdays from the late 1970s to the late 80s were spent planted on the couch, usually recovering from a sandlot game of my own. There weren’t the myriad cable viewing options we have today. If I had to watch football (and I always did), it had to be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who were television royalty by dint of their exclusive and unique broadcast contract with NBC. No other athletic program in America was assured national coverage every week.

After lunch and a soda it was the second half, late afternoon, and I watched teens do what this teen couldn’t, bracing for the pain of another enemy celebration. The high grass ground to mud, half the field splashed in October sun, they were faster, bigger, almost bionic. They marched to the goal line, shooting their rugged running backs through the holes blasted open by their mammoth linemen. They won all the time, always on television, their migraine-inducing fight song chirping for the tenth time, the leprechaun mascot doing back flips, all under the arms of Touchdown Jesus. In the glee of victory the beasts lurched to the sideline, where the taped hands of the players led the marching band with thrusts of their glinting helmets.

There are games where not only a sport is played, but a moral and social assessment is derived from the result. Muhammad Ali’s fights with Joe Frazier split America along political and racial lines; the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates battled the Yankees in a World Series between blue-collar, steel mill toughness and Madison Avenue sheen.

Such were the games in the 80s between Notre Dame and the Miami Hurricanes. The clashes were billed “Catholics vs. Convicts,” and I eagerly rooted for the felons. Miami outfought the Fighting Irish, and the contract to continue the series was not renewed. Notre Dame began to crumble.

It seems so long since they were important. Indeed, they last won a national title in 1989. Since then, they’ve been hamstrung with poor players and reckless coaching searches. They have been Notre Dame in name only.

So it’s curious that they and Army just announced a deal that will put them in pads on Yankee Stadium grass in 2010. Once a glorious rivalry, they are vainly reviving a time when they had talent.

Army isn’t Army anymore, and hasn’t been since my parents were kids in the 1940s and 50s. Neither is Notre Dame, any more than the arena they hope to fill is really Yankee Stadium, the new/old/bring the ghosts across the street/we honor Lou Gehrig but want you to pay A-Rod $2500 prices for a seat/ theme park in The Bronx.

It’s understandable that Army isn’t a power. Forget that it’s much harder to gain admission to the academy than any Ivy League school and that it has become fashionable to despise all things military. Cadets endure grueling 16-hour days of study and sweat just to prepare to protect those who despise them. A football prodigy with an allergy to books would never visit West Point.

Notre Dame’s fall from prominence is more perplexing. They have well-heeled alums funneling endless cash into the program and, if necessary, Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis, and a fistful of Heisman Trophy winners to romance recruits. If you don’t think that’s important, just ask North Carolina what it means to have Michael Jordan ready to dial a teen with basketball promise.

Supporters of the Fighting Irish declare that it’s impossible to keep up with the Joneses, Smiths, and other athletes of dubious educational heft who sign with schools of lower academic standards. That was true under Lou Holtz, yet he still won a national crown. Maybe the biggest mistake the program made was letting Lou leave. The conga line of replacements has been dreadful.

Charlie Weis, the cocky and corpulent leader of the Irish, has talked a wonderful game in his four years as head coach, but hasn’t sniffed the success he helped bring the New England Patriots as offensive coordinator. Usually, the problem is the reverse: former college coaches breaking their classroom rulers over the heads of millionaire pros who don’t give a damn about speeches. Weis is on coaching’s death row, and he knows it.

So what is the problem? Not employing a scorched-earth tactic to sign Urban Meyer is a good place to start. Meyer, a former assistant for Notre Dame, has returned the Florida Gators to perennial dominance (two national championships in three years).

Completely aware of Notre Dame’s history and relevance, he has an out-clause in his contract that allows him to South Bend should they covet him again. They would be fools not to.

Notre Dame assumed for too long that it could live on its name, that a scholarship or contract offer would blind all prospects with the brilliance of the Golden Dome. Too many fertile football teams get ample television sunlight. There are no more bullies.

Get good again, Notre Dame. We’d love to hate you.
